Exercise and sports have an impact in every field so, can they control depression?

Exercise and sports: 

are considered a stent of a healthy productive life which brings with huge benefits that you don't know about. We will know tons of them in this article as well as their effects on the recovery of diseases, improving memory, mood, and mental health besides controlling depression and overall brain functions.

Starting with the general benefits that all have an idea about as:

1. Physical health and muscle development :

3. Weight loss and body shape :

Exercise increases metabolism, or how many calories you burn in a day. Therefore, it can also help you maintain and increase lean body mass, which also helps increase the burning calories process.in addition to that, maintaining a good physique can help increase your self-steam and decrease embarrassment.

1. Children :

Results indicated that sports participation was positively related to indices of positive adjustment (e.g., social skills, self-esteem)on the contrary, shyness was associated with social skill deficiencies and internalizing problems. Furthermore, some evidence was also found to suggest that sports participation plays a unique protective role for shy children. Shy children who participated in the sport over time reported a significant decrease in anxiety. Results are examined in terms of the role of sport as a social context to enhance shy children's peer relations

2. Exercise-related Learning and Memory :

There is a study that shows the effects of voluntary exercise on cognitive function and brain-derived neurotrophic factor protein (BDNF)levels, a major player in the mechanisms governing the dynamics of memory formation and storage. Unexpectedly, the fastest acquisition (fewest errors and shortest latency) occurred during an experiment on mice that suggest an effect of trained mice on cognition, this novel approach assessing the time-determined endurance of cognitive and biochemical effects of exercise unveils new concepts in the exercise-learning field and reveals that beneficial effects of exercise on brain plasticity continues to evolve even after exercise has ended.

3. Exercise and depression :

  • A study published between the NCBI studies set the relationship between exercise and depression. While most depressed patients first seek treatment from their primary care providers, there is evidence to suggest that the addition of cognitive-behavioral therapies, like exercise, could improve treatment outcomes for many patients. Exercise is a behavioral-typed intervention that has shown great promise in alleviating symptoms of depression. The recent studies consider the promising approach of research reviewing the exercise-depression relations that support the efficacy of exercise as an adjunct treatment.


  • Furthermore, studies have also shown that people with depression are less fit and have diminished physical work capacity on the order of 80% to 90% of age-predicted norms, which in turn may contribute to other physical health problems.

  • The mechanisms that explain the antidepressant effects of exercise remain in debate; however, the efficacy of exercise in decreasing symptoms of depression has been well established. Information revealing the beneficial exercise effects on mood status, independent of fitness improvement, suggests that the focus should be on the frequency of exercise rather than duration or intensity until the behavior has been well established.

  • Exercise is associated with an anti-depressive effect in patients with mild to moderate forms of nonbipolar depressive disorders. Patients who continue to exercise tend to have lower depression scores than the sedentary ones (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression: before, 19.5 (3.3); after, 13 (5.5); p = 0.002. Self-assessed intensity of symptoms: before, 23.2 (7); after, 17.7 (8.1); p = 0.006). Patients appreciate the physical exercise, and rank exercise to be the most important element in comprehensive treatment programs. Exercise is believed to be a promising new approach in the treatment of nonbipolar depressive disorders of mild to moderate severity.

  • Furthermore, Aerobic exercise can produce substantial improvement in mood in patients with major depressive disorders in a short time.

4. Benefits of Exercise in Rheumatoid Arthritis

(RA) :

Exercise has been shown to have specific health benefits in people with RA, The reported benefits of properly designed physical exercise programs include improved cardiorespiratory fitness and cardiovascular health, increased skeletal muscle mass, reduced obesity (including attenuated trunk fat), improved strength, and physical functions, all achieved without exacerbation of disease activity or joint damage. Because RA patients have an increased CV risk factor profile, therefore reducing CV risk through exercise could have an enormous impact on patients with RA.

5. Brain functions and Exercise :

The activation of the monoamine-dependent system relies on exercise intensity. The exercise-related levels of stress could be an underlying modulating factor for their differential effects on brain monoamine systems. Different exercise intensities may induce different degrees of feedback in the hypothalamus-pituitary gland-adrenal gland axis, An overwhelming majority of studies accredit that the monoamine systems mediate the exercise-induced enhancement of various brain functions. That could improve the mood and relieve stress and anxiety.
